In today’s episode of Dr Nora, I give you the low down on forever chemicals from what they are, what they were used for and their potential health impacts.
FOREVER CHEMICALS
Forever chemicals were manufactured in the 1940’s as a surfactant - a product that reduces the surface tension between two liquids so they do not stick. This technology was employed in non-stick cookware in Teflon Pans. Over time it was found that they caused harm to health. Studies were performed on mice and found that these chemicals affected the immune system, liver function, bowels and physical development to name a few. Most manufacturers eventually stopped producing the chemicals. However, they are still found in some products today. They are commonly named as forever chemicals as they are very stable and do not break down easily in the environment or human body.
WHICH PRODUCTS
Common household products still do contain forever chemicals, such as grease-proof paper, microwavable popcorn bags, some non-stick bakeware, clothing apparel and dental floss. Many countries are now on board and are actively researching the chemicals.
ALTERNATIVES
The best way to reduce your exposure is to be mindful of the products you are using. Check labels to see how the product is manufactured and opt for products that state that they are free of forever chemicals.
