Dry, frizzy, brittle hair? These can all be signs of heat damage. In today’s episode of Dr Nora I take you through the causes of hair damage, what to look for and how to treat it. Followed by taking you through my own hair style regime.

HAIR

To understand hair better, it’s important to know the anatomy of it. The centre of the hair is known as the cortex. This gives the hair strength, elasticity and colour. Surrounding the cortex is the cuticle which protects the hair from mechanical and chemical damage. Once this shield is broken, damage can occur.

DAMAGED HAIR

This is usually related to heat. Heat damage occurs when the hair is subjected to temperatures above 230C. The increase time and heat spent on the hair is a good indicator of how damaged the hair will be.

Very often damaged hair presents as dry, brittle, easily tangling, dull and frizzy. Aside from heat, chemicals on the hair can cause damage.

HOT TO PROTECT HAIR

Hair will not heal overnight, this can be a long process that requires a lot of fortitude and starts with your general health. Make sure that you are eating a well balanced healthy diet, are sleeping and exercising well. Aside from this, there are a number of steps you can take to protect your hair.

- Look at the temperature of the tools you are using to style your hair.

- Apply a deep mask regularly, such as once a week

- Give your hair a break from the styling tools

- Allow the hair to dry naturally

- Use a wide toothed comb

- Have regular trims at the hairdresser - even if you’re trying to grow your hair.

- Limit the temperature exposure to your hair. Those with thinner hair only need around 90C to style, and those with thicker hair up to 150C.

- Avoid over washing your hair to keep in the natural oils.

- Use a soap that does not contain parabens, sulphates or silicones, which can strip away your natural oils.
