What Are Warts And How Are They Treated? | Doctor Explains
In today’s episode I take you through what cutaneous warts are, their causes and treatment.
CUTANEOUS WARTS
These are caused by a particular strain of Human Papilloma Virus and typically affect the hands, feet, knees or elbows. They can often appear alone or in a cluster and have a rough top appearance.
HOW TO TREAT
There are several options that may be explored. It is important to always check with your medical doctor to find the most suitable option for you.
We are unable to cure the virus, however, we can remove the virus containing skin that is causing the wart.
Some over the counter treatments may be used, this requires persistence and hard work, as warts treated this way can take up to 3 months to clear.
Failing this, your doctor may recommend cryotherapy, where by liquid nitrogen is sprayed onto the area of concern. This too requires regular treatment, at least twice a week.
If you have a large and resistant wart, your doctor may offer you electrosurgery, whereby the wart is removed with a surgical technique.
TRANSMISSION OF WARTS
Warts are contagious and may spread through skin to skin contact. However, they have an incubation period of up to 12 months, so you may not immediately see the visible wart until some time after.
