Why Gluten Free? 🧐
Approximately 1 in 70 Australians have a condition known as Coeliac Disease. This means that they are unable to eat products that contain gluten, including bread and foods made with rye, wheat and barley 🍞. When such foods are eaten symptoms such as tummy ache, tiredness and weight loss can occur. These symptoms disappear once gluten is taken out of the diet.
Most Australians don’t know they suffer from Coeliac disease. Diagnosis is important because if it’s left without management, small bowel damage can occur leading to poor absorption of vitamins.
Testing for coeliac disease can include a blood test which your doctor can organise, however, you should have eaten gluten in the preceding 6 weeks.
Coeliac disease is managed with a strict gluten free diet, sometimes seeing a dietician can be helpful.
