Schizophrenia is a medical condition that affects the normal functioning of a person’s brain. Some people do recover and with time some find their symptoms improve, however for many it can be a prolonged illness. Approximately 1 in 100 people will develop it in their lives.
The symptoms can include confused thinking, delusions and hallucinations such as hearing voices that are not actually there.
We don’t yet fully know what causes Schizophrenia but we know that it could be due to a combination of genetics and possible environmental factors, such as the use of drugs.
Schizophrenia is treated using medication and community support programmes. Treatment is necessary to reduce or even eliminate the symptoms.
If you or a family member are concerned about Schizophrenia or would like more information, please pop by and see me in clinic.
