Ultra Processed Foods | Should We Eat Them? | Doctor Explains 🩺

In today’s episode I give you the low down on Ultra-Processed Foods (UPFs). These are foods that generally have 5 or more ingredients to them which typically include additives and emulsifiers to preserve shelf life.

Recent research has shown that we are consuming a lot of UPFs which may have a negative impact on our health, such as contributing to heart disease and colorectal cancer.

Be sure to always check the nutritional label when buying food from the supermarket. If the ingredient list looks like a science experiment, it’s safe to say it’s a UPF.

I hope you enjoyed this video and as always if you have any questions or comments please drop me in a line.

How To Stay Healthy In Winter | 5 Ways The Body Changes 🥶

In today’s episode I take you 5 top changes that can happen to the body and the ways to help combat them.

DRY SKIN

For most of us this happens due to a number of factors, the drop in temperature, drop in humidity and indoor heating all lead to the degradation of the skin barrier. The net result? Dry itchy flaky skin.

The cold weather also exacerbates those with exisiting skin conditions such as eczema - a condition causing red, itchy irritate skin. The best solution to mitigate this is to keep the temperature indoors at a lower setting so that skin can acclimatise better.

Failing these methods, it’s very important to keep your skin hydrated and moisturised throughout the winter season. Using a non fragranced light moisturiser that is not too oily, regularly, helps to maintain moisture.

JOINT ACHES

Those who suffer with arthritic joints tend to feel they have more symptoms or flare ups in the winter months. Firstly during the cooler climates, air pressure also drops, it is thought that the muscles and tendons that surround the joints expand and contract which causes pain. Secondly, the fluid within the joints is thicker during the colder weather leading to stiffer joints.

A few ways to help combat this include, keeping your joints warm by wrapping up, taking warm showers, performing gentle exercises, if you have a warm pool locally, this can also help and finally if you are still struggling, be sure to speak with your medical doctor.

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

During the colder climates, viruses tend to be more stable in the air and stay around for longer in colder and dry climates.

Those with certain respiratory conditions such as asthma also struggle with breathing during the colder weather. This is due to the cold air leading to dryness in the airways and tightening the muscles around the airways. To help with this, doctors will advise their patients to use their preventer inhaler to avoid any complications with breathing. The addition of wearing a scarf around the mouth and nose also helps to maintain the humidity and can help with breathing.

MENTAL HEALTH

If you feel lazy in the winter and struggle to find motivation, rest assured you are not alone. This typically can occur due to having shorter days and so less sunlight. Our internal body clock relies on sunlight and a reduction of this can cause a decline in serotonin - our happy hormone. This can lead to a condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) which typically causes people to feel sluggish, low in mood, unmotivated, trouble sleeping and changes in appetite. To help combat this, try to ensure you have a regular sleep pattern, get as much sunlight as you can UV permitting and most importantly try to keep up regular exercise. This could be as simple as going for a walk around the block or a quick gym session.

CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING

Finally, during the winter season we all crank up the heating. If you use a gas fuel system then you could be at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. This is an odourless gas that if exposed to for long periods of time can lead to feeling unwell and even death. If you use a gas fuel heater be sure to have it checked regularly so it is compliant with local regulations, consider investing in a carbon monoxide monitor, keep a window open to ensure fresh air ventilation and do not use it for long periods over night and finally if you have any concerns about it, stop using it until it is checked out by a professional.

Everyone is talking about granting vaccine exemptions in Australia. As a General Practitioner, I get asked this question often, so in today’s episode I clear up some common misbeliefs and talk you through the official criteria for a vaccine exemption.

Vaccine exemptions are uncommon and are only given after much careful consideration by the patient’s medical team. All the information within this video has been taken from the Australian Government Department of Health and the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) and is current as of January 7th 2022. How To Fall Asleep Fast | Doctor Explains The Sleep Cycle 😴

In today’s episode of Dr Nora, I take you through our sleep cycle and discuss how to get that perfect night’s sleep.

WHY SLEEP?

Whilst we sleep, many important functions are taking place. Our immune system is working hard to regenerate and repair any issues. Our brain is busy preparing pathways to aid learning. A good rest is also important for our heart health and metabolism

WHAT MAKES US SLEEP?

Our sleep is controlled by two interacting systems. The first is the homeostatic sleep drive process which determines how long we have been awake for and ensures we feel sleepy and vice versa whilst we are asleep allowing us to wake up. The second system is our internal body clock or Circadian Rhythm which controls our sleep, body temperature and hormones. This is in tune with the natural sunrise and darkness giving us our normal pattern of sleep.

SLEEP HYGIENE

As doctors we often refer to someone’s “sleep hygiene" - these are habits that can help you to get a good night’s sleep. Here are a few tips:

- Know your body clock - sleep at set times to ‘program’ your body

- Look at your sleeping environment - is the bed comfortable, are you distracted by the tv?

- What are you consuming before bed? Caffeine keeps us awake.

WHAT CAN I DO?

Aside from looking at the factors above and making modifications as needed, you may wish to try mindfulness or relaxation techniques that may help to alleviate any stress or worry so that you can fall asleep. You may benefit from individual psychological help which can be arranged through your doctor.

The Low FODMAP Diet | Doctor Explains IBS, Bloating & Gas Treatment

In today’s episode of Dr Nora, I take you through the FODMAP diet which has been scientifically proven to help those suffering with IBS symptoms on the guidance of their medical doctor and dietician.

WHAT IS IBS?

IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a condition that affects the large bowel which can cause some uncomfortable symptoms. Such symptoms include, tummy pain, bloating, loose motions or flatulence. It can affect up to 3 in 10 Australians and can be caused by certain triggers, such as stress, caffeine or certain medications to name a few examples. It is important that this condition is diagnosed by your medical doctor as other conditions may also present in a similar way.

FODMAP

FODMAP stands for Fermented Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols. It pertains to certain groups of sugars that are poorly absorbed in the intestine leading to flatulence, bloating and cramps if consumed. Often those with IBS will be advised to try and follow a low FODMAP diet to reduce the incidence of symptoms on the guidance of their doctor or dietician.

Low FODMAP foods include bananas, blueberries, red bell peppers, pumpkin, rice, oats, lactose free milk and tofu. Non-marinated meats are also considered low FODMAP.

High FODMAP foods include apples, mangoes, milk from cows, soft cheeses, broccoli, chickpeas and mushrooms.

Usually a diet including low FODMAPs will be advised for a period of 2-6 weeks, after which, some food groups can be re-introduced as a challenge for up to 3 days. If symptoms persist with the food group then that particular food is to be avoided. It is vital to seek the guidance of a medical practitioner, as removing a food group from the diet may lead to imbalances in vitamins and minerals.

Sometimes, IBS is transient and so you may not need carry out such a diet for a prolonged period of time.
