Is Aspartame Bad For You? | Doctor Explains With Studies 🍦

In today’s episode of Dr Nora, I give you the low down on the sweetener aspartame and why it has been making the headlines as being possibly carcinogenic to humans.

ASPARTAME

Aspartame is a sweetener that was discovered by accident in 1965. It is 200 times sweeter than sugar and has less calories. It is used globally as a low calorie alternative to sugar. Over the years since discovery, many studies have been performed to assess it’s safety.

WHO

The World Health Organisation will be putting aspartame in a possibly carcinogenic to humans category after reviewing many studies. However, they do not give information on the quantity that is needed to be consumed.

ALTERNATIVES

You may wish to switch to an alternative source of sweetener, however it is important to always consume such foods in moderation and with a healthy and balanced diet. Sugar, for example, in excess can also have negative effects on the body such as high cholesterol, heart disease and diabetes.

Be sure to always check the nutritional label when buying products to see if they contain aspartame.

I hope you enjoyed this video and as always if you have any questions or comments please drop me in a line.

HEALTHY Banana Bread | Doctor Explains How to Make Low Calorie Cakes

Join me as I bake a healthier low calorie version of the classic Banana Bread. A popular choice by many in the belief the bananas make it a healthier option, it is often laden with sugar, oil and butter.

In this episode, I share with you healthier alternatives to common ingredients to create this masterpiece whilst maintaining a genuine taste.

RECIPE AND METHOD

For the mixture:

- 3 Bananas - mashed

- 1 Cup flour

- 3 Tbsp applesauce

- 1 large egg

- 1 tsp baking soda

- ½ tsp cinnamon

- ¼ tsp salt

- 1 squeeze of honey - optional

- 1 tsp cocoa nibs - optional

Mix the dry ingredients together and set aside. In a separate bowl mix the banana, eggs, applesauce and cocoa nibs together. Once you have achieved an even texture add in the dry ingredients. Be sure not to over beat the mixture as the cake will loose its height.

Transfer the mixture into a loaf tin and place in an already heated oven at 180 degrees for 60 minutes or until a knife can come out clean from the cake.

Set aside to rest and enjoy with a lovely cup of tea.

Please remember to always eat treats sensibly as part of a full healthy balanced diet and an active lifestyle.

How To Stay Healthy In Winter | 5 Ways The Body Changes 🥶

In today’s episode I take you 5 top changes that can happen to the body and the ways to help combat them.

DRY SKIN

For most of us this happens due to a number of factors, the drop in temperature, drop in humidity and indoor heating all lead to the degradation of the skin barrier. The net result? Dry itchy flaky skin.

The cold weather also exacerbates those with exisiting skin conditions such as eczema - a condition causing red, itchy irritate skin. The best solution to mitigate this is to keep the temperature indoors at a lower setting so that skin can acclimatise better.

Failing these methods, it’s very important to keep your skin hydrated and moisturised throughout the winter season. Using a non fragranced light moisturiser that is not too oily, regularly, helps to maintain moisture.

JOINT ACHES

Those who suffer with arthritic joints tend to feel they have more symptoms or flare ups in the winter months. Firstly during the cooler climates, air pressure also drops, it is thought that the muscles and tendons that surround the joints expand and contract which causes pain. Secondly, the fluid within the joints is thicker during the colder weather leading to stiffer joints.

A few ways to help combat this include, keeping your joints warm by wrapping up, taking warm showers, performing gentle exercises, if you have a warm pool locally, this can also help and finally if you are still struggling, be sure to speak with your medical doctor.

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

During the colder climates, viruses tend to be more stable in the air and stay around for longer in colder and dry climates.

Those with certain respiratory conditions such as asthma also struggle with breathing during the colder weather. This is due to the cold air leading to dryness in the airways and tightening the muscles around the airways. To help with this, doctors will advise their patients to use their preventer inhaler to avoid any complications with breathing. The addition of wearing a scarf around the mouth and nose also helps to maintain the humidity and can help with breathing.

MENTAL HEALTH

If you feel lazy in the winter and struggle to find motivation, rest assured you are not alone. This typically can occur due to having shorter days and so less sunlight. Our internal body clock relies on sunlight and a reduction of this can cause a decline in serotonin - our happy hormone. This can lead to a condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) which typically causes people to feel sluggish, low in mood, unmotivated, trouble sleeping and changes in appetite. To help combat this, try to ensure you have a regular sleep pattern, get as much sunlight as you can UV permitting and most importantly try to keep up regular exercise. This could be as simple as going for a walk around the block or a quick gym session.

CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING

Finally, during the winter season we all crank up the heating. If you use a gas fuel system then you could be at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. This is an odourless gas that if exposed to for long periods of time can lead to feeling unwell and even death. If you use a gas fuel heater be sure to have it checked regularly so it is compliant with local regulations, consider investing in a carbon monoxide monitor, keep a window open to ensure fresh air ventilation and do not use it for long periods over night and finally if you have any concerns about it, stop using it until it is checked out by a professional.

Expired Medication? | Doctor Explains Medicine Safety and Common Pitfalls 💊

In today’s episode I take you through some useful tips on how to get the most out of your prescribed medication to ensure that you are taking it correctly and safely.

Over 300 million prescriptions are given to patients each year in Australia alone and there are a number of pitfalls that can take place along a medication journey.

CONSULT WITH YOUR DOCTOR

This is arguably one of the most important tips. Whilst you are in your consultation with your doctor, be sure to cover the following to get the best understanding:

- What is the medicine for

- How long should I take it

- How often should I take it

- When should I expect to see a change

- What are the side effects

- When should I come back

PHARMACY

The next step in your medication journey is to speak with the pharmacist. I have personally been dispensed expired medication which is not ideal as expired medication may not work and they may have untoward side effects. Usually pharmacists should be checking all the medications before dispensing, however as seen in my example this is not always the case. Here are some things to consider when getting your medication:

- Check the expiry

- Check the label for the correct name, medication, dosage and instructions.

- Make sure the medication is sealed.

AT HOME

Now that you have your medication, be sure to continue with your safety checks before taking your medication.

- Read the package insert

- Reflect on how you feel after taking the medication - do you have any side effects?

- Make an appointment to see your doctor for follow up.

Tired All the Time? - Doctor Explains the Symptoms, Causes and Solutions

In this episode I go through the possible causes of tiredness and how to fix them.

Accounting for almost 1.5% of all presentations to the family doctor, the feeling of being tired all the time is certainly very common. There are a multitude of reasons why, but it is important for the medical doctor to elicit any ‘red flag’ symptoms, such as, a new onset of tiredness in an otherwise well elderly person, abnormal bleeding, shortness of breath and fever just to name a few. Commonly tiredness may be related to non-organic causes, such as poor sleep, feeling low in mood or being stressed. In other circumstances, it may be related to a deficiency such as a vitamin deficiency. Other reasons include underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes or a thyroid disturbance. More worryingly it may be caused by sinister causes such as an undiagnosed cancer. There are many causes of tiredness of which this list is not exhaustive, however, if you yourself do suffer from tiredness, it is worthwhile speaking with your medical doctor for a full check up.

Having a healthy balanced diet with regular exercise can be a great way to combat tiredness that is not related to any underlying medical condition.

I hope you enjoy the workout and as always if you have any questions or comments please drop me in a line.
