What are you having for lunch today? 🥗

I love eating healthy and I truly believe that healthy eating leads to a healthy mind.

Today I’m having a salmon and avocado salad. Salmon is rich in omega 3 fatty oils which is fantastic for the brain, mood and vision. It’s also high in protein and loaded with other essential minerals. Avocado is also full to the brim with healthy fats and vitamins. These are all essential for a healthy heart and general wellbeing.

Lunch doesn’t have to be fancy, just chop up a few bits and pieces and bon appétit 👌

If you have any questions or want advice on healthy eating pop by and see me in clinic.

Men, if you can look after your bike then you can look after your prostate 🏍

This month is all about prostate cancer awareness.

But what is a prostate? This is a gland that sits in the male pelvis and is responsible for producing fluid in semen. As men get older the prostate increases in size and can lead to trouble passing urine.

In some men however the changes in the prostate can be due to cancer. Symptoms that may be experienced include feeling the need to urinate frequently, difficulty passing urine or finding blood in the urine or semen.

These are not always signs of prostate cancer but if you do experience these it’s vital to speak to your GP for a check up. This could include an examination and a blood test.

If you have any concerns or issues pop by and see me in clinic.

Are you taking your pumps correctly?

Asthma affects around 2.5 million Australians - that’s 1 in every 9, and a common reason for poor control is inhaler technique.

As part of asthma week I want to make sure that all asthmatics have an up to date action plan in place. This ensures that you and others around you know what to do if your asthma worsens. So I’ll be giving you the opportunity to pop by and check your inhaler technique to make sure your getting the most out of your medication.

If you haven’t been diagnosed with asthma but have symptoms, such as breathlessness, wheezing, cough or a feeling of tightness in the chest worse in cold weather then come and see me for an examination. With the correct inhalers, asthma is easily controlled. Left alone asthma can be life threatening so it’s important that if you do have asthma you have regular check ups.

Diabetes Week | The Facts, Myths, Theresa May is Diabetic? and Why You Should Care

Did you know every 5 minutes in Australia someone is developing diabetes?

Every day this week I’ll be sharing with you the different types of diabetes from Type 1, Type 2, Gestational and Pre-diabetes, what causes them, the symptoms, how to manage it and how to lower your risk.

MYTHS

Unlike other diseases such as the common cold or flu. Diabetes is not contagious. It cannot be passed by kissing and it is not a sexually transmitted disease.

You don’t just get diabetes because you are overweight. Whilst it is a risk factor, not all overweight people will develop diabetes and similarly not all people of a healthy weight will avoid diabetes.

Diabetes can cause some serious health issues, but when managed correctly you can continue to lead a normal healthy active lifestyle.

Did you know Great Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May is diabetic?

Oscar winners Tom Hanks and Halle Berry are diabetic.

18 time grammy award winner Aretha Franklin is diabetic.

Even professional athletes such as NFL Quarterback Jay Cutler is diabetic.

Ok these aren’t normal lifestyles, but you get the idea.

ISSUE

The main issue is that diabetes impacts the body’s ability to control its blood sugar levels. Having a high blood sugar level can affect a number of different organs in your body. It can lead to having a higher risk of heart attacks and stroke, kidney failure, vision problems, high blood pressure and mental health problems just to name a few.

Whilst these can all have a negative impact on your life expectancy its important to remember that when managed correctly you can continue to lead a normal healthy lifestyle even sometimes having the honour of navigating Brexit. Good luck Ms. May ;)

It’s Exercise Right Week!

Exercise has many beneficial impacts on the body from overall health and well being to the prevention of chronic medical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

It’s so common to hear ‘I don’t have time for exercise’ but it doesn’t have to start with anything strenuous!

There are many exercises you can do at work, such as going for regular walks, stretching out your arms and legs and eating your lunch away from your desk. Research has shown that with 30 minutes of exercise or activity on most days of the week, the risk of chronic health problems are reduced.

So what are you waiting for, get up and take a walk!

For more useful tips visit http://exerciseright.com.au or come by and see me in clinic.
